A Blubbering Idiot

Something's wrong with me. For the past couple days, I can't watch a movie without crying.

I don't cry often. I tear up slightly a few times a month. If I get weepy 3 times a year, that's a lot. And I rarely ever make it into actual sobbing, cannot-talk crying. That happened twice in the past 4-5 years.

So why do I start tearing up from 2 movies? Bridge to Terabithia and The Kite Runner were really hard to watch. Brigde especially. I tried recapping the movie to Harley and barely made it through. The were both such good stories that really hit and stick with you.

Since both were based on books, I'm thinking I'll try to read them. I've been having a hard time getting started reading books. Since I have so much reading during the semester, I'd rather watch TV now that I have nothing to do (I heart Deadliest Catch).

American Idol Finale

Harley and I have been watching AI all season. We've seen every episode (with pleanty of fast-forwarding of the group numbers and most of the show). So you can imagine we were very excited to see the final winner announced. Check out what happened:

Artistic Savant

Stephen Wiltshire from London is a star among savants. Stephen is autistic. He did not speak his first words "pencil" and "paper" until he was 5. Yet, when he was 11 he drew a perfect aerial view of London after only one helicopter ride. In this film, Stephen draws an aerial view of Rome after one viewing. It takes him three days to draw what he saw for 45 minutes.

They call him the Living Camera. I watched this during a conference call and was blown away.

Things I Will Never Do

in no particular order:
- climb Mt. Everest
- participate in an actual MMA fight (mixed martial arts)
- visit Afghanistan
- use the phrase "I'm just thinking aloud"
- cut off all contact with my children
- quit my day job to become a traveling folk singer
- eat poo
- cook any more Harley-friendly meals if the socks are not folded in the next 72 hours

Secret Service Save Reagan

wow...

F Bomb on Local News

Last night, during a "Medium" commercial break on NBC, there was an incident. Sue Simmons was doing a voice over and dropped the f-bomb. You may not know her name, but if you've ever watched NBC in New York, you know who Sue Simmons is.

Here's the video of the offending incident. We've been laughing about it at work all afternoon.

THIS JUST IN - Sue Simmons apologizes. Turns out they played the wrong video and she was yelling at the technician. She must not have realized they were live. That, or they played the wrong take. Either way, she seems like a total bitch!

Funniest Thing I've Seen in A While

Things Younger than John McCain

Wow. This could be one of the funniest sites around. It's not only funny and provacative, but it really makes you think. Do we want a guy who's older than Alaska in the White House?

Then again, Reagan got through this issue against Mondale. In one of the debates, some one asked him if he was too old to be President. He replied abruptly saying, "I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for politihttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifcal purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience" (at 2:10). Even Mondale cracked up. But in , his age started to show, with a lot of stopping in the middle of sentences and losing his train of thought.

Looking back, Reagan was amazing at public speaking:
- shut up!
- Blame
- who's paying?

Cool Lost stuff

I love you, Lostpedia!!

The single of "Everyday" by Buddy Holly was released in July of 1957, over one year
after Locke's birthdate of May 30, 1956. It would be impossible for Emily to have been playing this record the night of John's birth.

Buddy Holly's song "Everyday" is heard in the first flashback. Buddy Holly was a famous victim of a plane crash.

Horace Goodspeed, in Locke's dream, mentions that he has been dead for 12 years. This places the date of the Purge on December 19, 1992 (December 19 being Ben's birthday).

The orderly who told Locke to take a walkabout is named Matthew Abaddon. "Abaddon" is the name of the biblical Angel of the Abyss (Revelation 9:11). The name is Greek for "destruction" or "the destroyer". As a place, it is likened to Sheol or hell.

The man who visited Locke at his birth and when he was 7 is named Richard Alpert. The real-life Dr. Richard Alpert (aka Ram Dass) is a noted psychologist and Hindu spiritualist. In 1963, he was dismissed from Harvard University for his research (in collaboration with Timothy Leary, Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg and others) into psilocybin, LSD-25, and other psychedelic chemicals. He later traveled to India, where he was given his Hindu spiritual name "Ram Dass", which translates as "Servant of God

Mother's Day

People have been asking me what I'm getting Harley for Mother's Day. What do you get the most wonderful beautiful, talented, sweet, thoughtful and considerate wife/mother on the planet? What one gift could sum up all the passion and devotion I feel for her? What single gift could express my appreciation and gratitude, my pride and happiness?

There's really only one answer: the best sex of her life

I know it's early, but Happy Mother's Day, Harley!

Why Has No One Told Me of These?

Building Update: 5/06/08

They've gotten a few more floors out the way and seem to be moving much faster. They remove the walls of each floor, then the floor. They put planks of wood up as they take the floors down so the works can dismantle from above and below. You can see people through the holes.

I don't know why I'm so fascinated with this dismantlement! Random people in the office just stare out the window and watch. It's such a slow but persistent process, like watching time fly before your eyes. You can literally watch change happen, with actual results. We rarely ever get to do in such a clear, deliberate way. It helps pass the time and helps us see time's passing.

The New View

Lilah hit another milestone. Her stroller seat can either face us (so she faces backward) or away from us (so she sees the road in front of her). We had it facing backwards till now so we could see her and she could see us.

At 18 months, it is time to flip her. Instead of seeing her gorgeous face, all I get is the top of her head. We've started to learn if she's awake by whether she's pointing at any thing. When she's awake she points.

David Blaine is F*cking Crazy

In case you didn't know, David Blaine broke the world record for holding one's breath. He was under water for 17 minutes and 4 seconds, beating the previous record of 16 minutes and 32 seconds. All of this live on Oprah!!

Apparently, he was always fascinated by holding his breath, even as a child. The pain you feel when holding your breath is caused by the build up of carbon dioxide. If you get over that, your body can continue to work on the oxygen it has stored already.

Blaine took in pure oxygen before submerging himself. Amazingly, it doesn't look like an illusion but the real thing. That guy is f*cking crazy.
